In most cities today, people are keeping two or even 3 cell phones for work and personal use. Add to this, we have MP3 players, eBook readers and laptops to name a few of the devices we carry around with us daily. In some cases, mobile phone operators try to outdo each other and offer ridiculously cheap plans that we are unable to resist. Unfortunately, most of the time, their coverage is so bad we have to keep our other carrier around. These, plus other multitudes of reason make dual sim card phone so popular.

The only big company to come out with attractive and usable models is Samsung. Dual sim card phones are very popular in Asia especially China and India. In both countries, they have local brands that produce units. Of course, these are mostly only popular with the local market since everyone wants brand name phones.

If you do not find the model that you want, another option is to buy a dual sim adapter or watch phone. It is a device that can hold two sim cards that you attach to your phone. It is available for most brand name phone, even Blackberry. However, these adapters usually require you to turn your phone on and off to switch from one sim card to another. The Samsung phones on the other hand, allow for dual standby. This means that you are able to use both sim cards for phone calls and SMS messaging at the same time, seamlessly. Alas, dual sim mobile phones are usually lacking in features and people are moving in the direction of smart phones such as iPhones and Blackberry’s.

Since last year, news that brands such as Nokia, LG, Samsung, will come out with dual sim models. Samsung has, but they are sadly outdated. Nokia is said to be coming out with models by Q4 of 2010. Still, it is a good sign. Eventually, people will get tired of carrying around the weight of the world in their bags and will demand for dual sim card phones and WiFi phones that can handle at least two lines and when there is demand, we are sure that the big brands will supply.
